This is the time of the year when ghouls and goblins come out and knock on your door, screaming “Trick or treat!”. It’s also the time of the year that candy is most prevalent. As a Lab owner, you will want to make sure that during this holiday season, starting with Halloween; candy is kept out of the reach of your Labrador puppy or adult. This can start a serious craving for candy and it can also be dangerous! The main danger is with chocolate. Theobromine, also known as xantheose, is a bitter alkaloid of the cacao plant, found in chocolate, as well as in a number of chocolate-free foods made from theobromine sources including the leaves of the tea plant, the kola or cola nut, and acai berries. Because dogs metabolize Theobromine more slowly, they can succumb to Theobromine poisoning from just 50 grams of chocolate.
